Thoughts: Core Skills and Curriculum

Did you know that about 43% of employers surveyed mentioned that they can not find proper skilled entry level workers as per a survey conducted in 9 countries in 2013. It was estimated that this percentage will be worse, and in 2022 there will be a global shortfall of 85 millions skilled workers.

Young people are not being equipped with skills needed by the job market in schools and universities. Teachers have the responsibilities to develop and improve specific market skills and even skills for jobs that are not created yet. This includes cognitive, social and emotional skills. Without the right skills, countries will fall behind in technological progress, globalisation, and economic growth. Reports show that employers need employees who can think critically, solve problems creatively, communicate, collaborate and innovate.

Teachers must focus more on skills-oriented learning. They should develop and improve students' communication skills, critical thinking and problem solving skills, digital literacy, language, creativity, and leadership skills. Students should be taught how to take initiatives, to lead, to be flexible, to innovate. The challenge here is that every student learn differently, so differentiated instruction is needed so that every learner would learn at their own pace.

Curriculum also must be updated to embed transferable skills where they can be interdisciplinary, rigorous, and project-based. Curriculum can be skills-driven, and interest driven.

Finally, the education system have the mission to develop global citizens that can live and work in a globalised economy.
